BEIJING – About 17,000 telecom and online fraud suspects have been captured since June 25, said Zheng Xiang, deputy head of the Criminal Investigation Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security, at a news conference on Tuesday.

The ministry launched a nationwide operation targeting fraud crimes from June 25 to Sept 30.

The public security departments in Yunnan province and other regions were asked to strengthen the fight against online scams and further cooperate with law enforcement departments in Myanmar, given the prevalence of online fraud in northern Myanmar targeting Chinese citizens on the mainland, Zheng said.

As of now, 2,317 suspects involved in telecom fraud have been handed over to China’s police by the Myanmar law enforcement departments, according to the ministry.
