Chinese men’s player makes historic Grand Slam win

Newcomer Wu Yibing and his compatriot Zhang Zhizhen became the first male mainland players to compete in the tournament's main draw after the qualifiers last week.

BEIJING – China’s Grand Slam main draw newcomer Wu Yibing made history for China after defeating Nikoloz Basilashvili from Georgia on Monday, enabling him to enter the second round of the US Open tennis tournament.

Wu won against the No 31 seeded 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Wu Yibing and his compatriot Zhang Zhizhen became the first male Chinese mainland players to compete in the tournament’s main draw after battling through three qualifying rounds last week.

Zhang is ranked No 138 in the world while Wu is ranked No 178.
