Death toll from Nepal’s monsoon-induced disasters hits 88

According to Nepal Police, as of Thursday, floods, landslides, and other monsoon-induced disasters killed 25 people in Gandaki Province, 23 in Lumbini, 19 in Koshi, seven in Sudurpaschim, six in Bagmati, and four each in Madhesh and Karnali provinces.

KATHMANDU – Monsoon-induced disasters have claimed the lives of 88 people across Nepal in the past month.

According to Nepal Police, as of Thursday, floods, landslides, and other monsoon-induced disasters killed 25 people in Gandaki Province, 23 in Lumbini, 19 in Koshi, seven in Sudurpaschim, six in Bagmati, and four each in Madhesh and Karnali provinces.

Likewise, 106 people were injured across the country, including 31 in Koshi Province, 26 in Gandaki, 15 in Karnali, 11 in Sudurpaschim, nine in Lumbini, and seven each in Madhesh and Bagmati provinces.

According to Nepal Police, six people are missing due to floods and landslides across the country. Two each are missing in Koshi and Bagmati provinces and one each in Gandaki and Sudurpaschim provinces. Search and rescue operations are currently underway to locate the missing individuals.

A total of 161 houses, 68 sheds, 41 bridges, one school, and two government offices were damaged during the period, which displaced 3,462 households and killed 479 cattle.

Meanwhile, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast extremely heavy rainfall in some places of the country until Saturday morning.

According to a special bulletin issued by the department, most parts of the country will witness light to moderate rainfall and some places could see extremely heavy rainfall until Saturday morning.

Some places of Koshi, Madhesh, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces could witness rain with thunder and lightning in that period. Extremely heavy rainfall is likely in some places of the four provinces.

Red alerts have been issued in 43 districts of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces. Yellow alerts have been issued in the remaining 34 districts, including all three districts of Valley—Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur.
