PUNAKHA – An 81-year-old woman died while her 87-year-old husband was rescued after the couple was swept into the Mochhu River on April 25.

The police said the couple, who were living with their son and daughter-in-law, were last seen around 6:30 am, walking near the riverbank with a dog.

A passerby later found the man sitting beside his wife’s body around four kilometres from the Punakha Mochhu parking area. The man, who appeared disoriented, was taken to the hospital.

A forensic investigation confirmed drowning as the cause of death of the woman and found no evidence of foul play.

According to the police, the husband had previously threatened to take his own life by jumping into the river three days earlier, but was restrained by his son at the time.

The investigation found that the couple entered the river together and were swept downstream by strong currents. Their footprints and paw prints were found along the riverbank.

According to police, there were no indications of family disputes or external factors leading to the incident. Neighbours interviewed by police reported no signs of trouble.

The woman’s body has been handed over to the family.

The case is still under investigation.
