VIENTAINE – Electric taxis hit streets of Vientiane

Some 150 electric taxis will be available for hire following the launch of the service in Vientiane yesterday by Vietnam’s Green and Smart Mobility (GSM) firm.

Laos is the first country outside of Vietnam where the firm is operating the service.

Taxis will be available around the clock, under the brand name “Xanh SM”. The expansion into Laos marks a step further in GSM’s “Go Green Global” strategy to establish itself as an international electric mobility services provider and promote the use of green mobility beyond borders.

The Global CEO of GSM, Mr Nguyen Van Thanh, said “Launching Xanh SM Laos is a special milestone that marks the beginning of GSM’s global expansion journey.”

“We will keep exploring and innovating to create a unique fusion of local culture with international service standards that promises to deliver an exceptional experience to local residents as well as international visitors in Laos. The triumphant Xanh SM Laos will be a significant driving force behind GSM’s global expansion. Working alongside VinFast, GSM is determined to push forward eco-friendly mobility worldwide, paving the way for a better and more sustainable future for all.”

Vietnamese Ambassador to Laos Mr Nguyen Ba Hung said the provision of electric vehicles by Vietnam supports the Lao government’s national development strategy, which encourages Vietnamese business operators to choose Laos as a destination for investment and development.

“I hope the Lao government will create favourable conditions for GSM to achieve its business goals, support Laos’ economic development and bolster cooperation with the Lao government to fulfil the long-term strategic goal to develop green mobility for a sustainable green future,” the ambassador said.

Starting from November 9, residents of Vientiane and foreign visitors will be able to book a taxi through the Xanh SM Laos application, which can be downloaded from the App Store and Play Store.

Customers can also hail a taxi on the street. The route and fare on every trip will be clearly displayed for the convenience of passengers.

The company plans to increase its fleet to 1,000 vehicles and expand to other popular destinations such as Vangvieng, as well as other provinces.

Xanh SM Laos is planning to expand its operations throughout the country and expects to create thousands of new job opportunities for local residents.

These opportunities offer attractive career development prospects and do not require any initial capital investment while also providing optimal income and professional training.

Green SM drivers will be trained to become green ambassadors that directly connect the brand with customers and help to enhance Laos’ eco-friendly image.
