DHAKA – Chief Advier Prof Muhammad Yunus today said that the government expects inflation to fall below 8 percent by June.

Adding that the biggest challenge for this government is inflation, he said that in February, inflation dropped below 9.32 percent, the lowest in 22 months.

He said this while addressing the nation on the occasion of Independence Day and upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.

Prof Yunus said that for the past 16 years, Sheikh Hasina established a system of massive plundering, and the people were its victims.

“When they fled in the face of a student and public uprising, they left behind a shattered economy.”

Prof Yunus said, “After taking charge in this situation, the interim government has undertaken various initiatives to restore the economy. Discipline has returned to the banking sector, and gradually, other economic indicators have started to show positive trends.

“Our expatriate brothers and sisters have brought relief to the country’s devastated economy. Since the interim government took charge, remittance inflow has consistently increased. In February, remittance flow set a record, rising nearly 25 percent to reach $2.5 billion.”

One of the main tasks of the interim government was to restore confidence in the banking system, establish discipline by protecting depositors’ interests, and ensure credibility in financial records, Prof Yunus said.

He said confidence in the banking system has been restored.

As a result, discipline has returned to the economy, and this has been one of the key achievements of the interim government, said the chief adviser.
