CHATTOGRAM – Three separate fires broke out on two hills in Chattogram city and a portion of a hill inside the Korean Export Processing Zone (KEPZ) in Anwara yesterday.

The fires broke out in Lalkhan Bazar’s Tankir Pahar, the hill behind Chittagong Medical College dormitory, and KEPZ. The fires were brought under control with no casualties reported, said fire service.

However, the police said around 22 thatched houses were gutted in the Tankir Pahar area.

Officer-in-Charge Aftab Hossain of Khulshi Police Station told The Daily Star, “The fire originated from a kitchen stove and immediately spread to adjacent establishments, going out of control.”

“On information, firefighters from Khulshi and Agrabad rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control,” he added.

According to the Fire Service and Civil Defence, they received news of the fire around 6:30pm near the CMCH dormitories. Following this, two fire engines from the Chandanpura Fire Station went and extinguished the fire.

Nurul Huda, senior officer of the Chandanpura Fire Station, said they suspected that dry leaves and trees caught fire likely from a cigarette.

The fire did not reach the dormitory and was brought under control, he said.

Meanwhile, a fire broke out this afternoon on a hillock of Deyang Hill inside KEPZ in Anwara, Chattogram.

The Fire Service reported that around 5:00pm, a fire broke out on the hill but the reason behind it was still unknown.
