A man working at the under-construction Tanahun Hydropower Project in Rishing Rural Municipality-1 died as he was hit by a falling boulder on Saturday. Police identified the deceased as Krishna Bahadur Pulami, 50, of Rishing-1. Pulami succumbed to his injuries at Damauli Hospital.
In Parbat, two people died after a landslide buried a house belonging to Kul Prasad Padhya at Karkineta of Phalewas Municipality-1. Police said 40-year-old Jhalak Prasad Sharma and 33-year-old Tulsi Prasad Sharma died in the disaster when they tried to rescue the domesticated animals.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Khumlal Bhusal, a rescue team from the District Police Office retrieved their bodies from the landslide debris. Three buffaloes and four goats were also killed in the landslide.
Meanwhile, separate landslides swept away two houses and two sheds at Thadapakha area of Mahashila Rural Municipality, Parbat, in which 13 goats and two buffaloes were killed.
All 36 sluice gates of the Gandak barrage at Tribeni have been opened as water crossed danger level in the Narayani, a major river system in central Nepal. According to Mahesh Rayamajhi, sub-inspector at the Tribeni Police Post, the gates were opened as the flow in the river measured 260,000 cusec on Saturday afternoon.
Similarly, water crossed the danger mark in the Rapti and Babai rivers in Lumbini Province due to heavy rains in their catchment areas. The local administrations urged people living in riverside settlements to be on high alert.
In Koshi, the country’s biggest river system, water flow reached the danger level as it has been raining continuously in the hill districts of Koshi Province over the past few days. According to the Koshi Barrage Control Room, the water flow measured 272,485 cusec at 3pm on Saturday. Thirty-five of 56 sluice gates were opened to mitigate inundation on the Nepal side.
Similarly, water level increased significantly in the Mahakali and Karnali rivers as well. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police in Kanchanpur Umesh Joshi, the district administration banned heavy vehicles on the bridge of Sharada Barrage as the water flow in the Mahakali reached 121,000 cusec on Saturday evening.
Vehicular movement has been disrupted along highways and road sections in several parts of the country as roads have been blocked due to floods and landslides triggered by incessant rainfall since late Friday.
Vehicles were blocked on the Syangja and Waling road sections of the Siddhartha Highway. The authorities halted the vehicles en route as workers cleared the debris on the road.
A landslide near Sunkoshi Rural Municipality-2 disrupted BP Highway in Kamalamai, Sindhuli, for some hours.
Heavy rainfall also blocked the Sisneri-Dakshinkali section of the road, affecting transport between Hetauda and Kathmandu.
In Lalitpur district, road sections from Tribhuvan Rajpath to Pangjure near Bhattedanda were blocked and the authorities said they were working to resume regular traffic there.
The Bhimphedi-Fakhel-Matatirtha road section was disrupted due to obstruction near Indrasarovar Rural Municipality-5 in Makwanpur district.
In Lamjung, the Besisahar-Dumre road was disrupted for some hours due to a landslide. Authorities said they are actively working to resume vehicular movement between Lamjung and the neighbouring districts.
Traffic along the Ghorahi-Tulsipur road section of Dang district in the mid-western region was also disturbed.
Several parts of Madhesh have been inundated due to continuous rainfall. Various areas of Birgunj Metropolitan City including Chhapkaiya, Bazar Chhapkaiya, Ghadiarwa, Ranighat, Shreepur, and Nagawa have been flooded.
Efforts are underway to manage water levels and clear debris in the affected areas.
In the east, residents near rivers and streams in Belbari of Morang district have been alerted after the water level rose.
In the west, Karnali Highway is blocked near Humla Bazaar of Kalikot district due to landslides at various places, affecting transport between Surkhet and Jumla districts.
In Palpa, major sections like the Aryabhanjyang-Rampur Road, Tansen-Ridi Road, Kaligandaki Corridor, and Siddhartha Highway have been affected due to numerous landslides. The Bartung area near Tansen, Kalimati, and the Dumre-Charchare section are particularly hit.
