Foreigners allegedly buying lower-priced homes in Malaysia

GEORGE TOWN – Claims that foreign buyers acquired lower-priced homes meant for Malaysians will be answered at the Penang state legislative assembly.

The issue was highlighted by Izhar Shah Arif Shah (PN-Seberang Jaya), who claimed that there were properties owned by Chinese nationals valued below the state’s minimum threshold for foreign ownership.

Official data showed Chinese nationals owned 365 houses in Penang in 2025, with a combined value of RM150.2mil and an average price of RM411,506 per unit.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said state housing committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo would respond to the issue in the assembly today.
