German Chancellor Olaf Scholz begins three-day China visit in Chongqing

Scholz is the first leader of Western powers to visit China this year. It is his second visit to China following the one-day whirlwind trip in November 2022 amid the COVID-19 pandemic less than a year after he took office.

BEIJING – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in Chongqing Sunday morning to kick off his three-day official visit to China.

On Sunday morning, he visited Bosch Hydrogen Powertrain Systems (Chongqing) Co Ltd. The company, a joint venture between German engineering and technology company Bosch and Chongqing-based premium commercial vehicle manufacturer Qingling Motors, was set up in 2021 to develop, assemble and sell fuel cell systems in China.

Scholz is the first leader of Western powers to visit China this year. It is his second visit to China following the one-day whirlwind trip in November 2022 amid the COVID-19 pandemic less than a year after he took office.

Accompanied by a business delegation, he will first visit Chongqing on Sunday before heading to Shanghai on Monday.
