DHAKA – The BNP today (October 16, 2022) alleged that the government scrapped the caretaker government system with a motive to stay in office till 2041.

“Awami League did not cancel the caretaker system suddenly rather they did it as part of their bigger plan of staying in power till 2041,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir while addressing a discussion at a city hotel.

The BNP leader said that the caretaker government is not the demand of only BNP or Awami League rather it is a mechanism for bringing stability to the political culture of the country.

Fakhrul alleged that the government has turned the country into a “failed state” by “misrules and misdeeds.” To end this, he urged the party leaders and activists to get united.

Referring to the Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader’s comment that Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project has turned into a major issue for the government, Fakhrul said, “You (Quader) should have resigned before making such comments as your government took the project.”

Saying that it is very much possible to restore caretaker government system, party’s standing committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan said, “Constitution is not a Bible. It can be changed whenever necessary for the sake of people.”

Khan said it is not possible to hold a free and fair election under a partisan government and that’s why the BNP is demanding election under a non-partisan interim government, no matter what it is called.
