KATHMANDU – Continuous rainfall since Sunday morning has flooded 43 houses in Bardiya.

Houses in Auri, Bhagatpur, and Dudha of Barbardiya Municipality-8 were inundated as these areas have been experiencing heavy rainfall.

According to Superintendent of Police Sudhir Raj Shahi, Rammapur received 226.4mm of rain in the past 24 hours. Likewise, the hydrology station in Chepang recorded 172mm of rainfall.

Although the downpour has caused water levels in the Babai and Karnali rivers to rise, the water level has not crossed the danger mark. However, the increasing water flow has caused the embankment slope at the Babai Irrigation Project site to slip. Officials are trying to control the flood erosion on the embankment, said Project Chief Sushil Devkota.

As rain is expected to continue till Monday, riverbank settlements have been requested to stay on high alert, said Mohan Aryal, deputy chief district officer.

“Although chances of flood occurrences are low, water levels may rise in the rivers due to continuous rainfall. That is why we have asked people in the risk-prone areas to stay alert,” Aryal said.
