YANGON – Heavy rains in Kachin State have caused some flash floods in five townships, local residents said on June 22.

Currently, some areas of Moehnyin Township, some parts of Hai Township, some parts of Nammati Township, and some neighborhoods in Moe Kaung Township and Hpakant Township are flooded and rescue operations are underway.

Rescue teams said that Nant Taing and Nant Rin streams in Moe Kaung are above the danger level, and more than 10,000 people are being displaced.

Locals say that the floodwaters in Hpakant’s Nuru River are higher this year than last year because the city’s neighbourhoods are flooded and the tributaries are unable to be cleaned properly.

A local journalist from Hpakant wrote on his social media that it has been raining continuously for over a week, that low-lying houses are flooded, and that food is hard to come by. There are people helping, but the need is great.

Other towns and villages have also experienced flooding and road closures, while the Indawgyi region has seen continuous erosion and siltation of farmland.
