Hong Kong issues typhoon signal No 1 as tropical storm Nalgae nears

HONG KONG – The Hong Kong Observatory on Sunday night raised typhoon signal number 1 as Severe Tropical Storm Nalgae edged closer to the city.

The HKO issued the Standby Signal No 1, which meant a tropical cyclone was centered within 800 kilometers of Hong Kong and may affect the territory.

“According to the present forecast track, Nalgae will remain a distance of over 600 kilometers from Hong Kong this morning (October 31),” the HKO said in a bulletin.

At midnight, the storm was estimated to be about 760 kilometers south-southeast of Hong Kong and was forecast to move northwest or north-northwest at about 10 kilometers per hour towards the northern part of the South China Sea.

Members of the public were advised to take note of the latest weather information before departing from home on Monday morning.

Under the combined effect of Nalgae and the northeast monsoon, local winds were expected to strengthen gradually Monday and seas will be rough with swells. Nalgae will edge closer to the coast of Guangdong on Tuesday and Wednesday, the HKO added.
