Hong Kong team discovers new species of box jellyfish

It is the first time a previously unknown box jellyfish species has been found in the waters off the coast of China.

BEIJING – A new species of box jellyfish has been recently discovered by a Hong Kong university at the Mai Po Nature Reserve, a significant wetland located in the city’s northwestern outskirts.

A science team led by Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) unveiled their groundbreaking discovery on Tuesday.

According to the team, the newly identified jellyfish species, which belongs to the Tripedaliidae family, has been named “Tripedalia maipoensis”.

It is the first time a previously unknown box jellyfish species has been found in the waters off the coast of China.
