Hundreds of houses gutted in Rohingya camp fire

The incident took place at Rohingya Camp number 21 around 9:00pm, with hundreds of Rohingya houses made of bamboo and plastic were burnt.

DHAKA – Hundreds of houses were gutted in a fire at Chakmarkul Rohingya camp in Hwaikong union of Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar last night.

The incident took place at Rohingya Camp number 21 around 9:00pm, reports our Cox’s Bazar staff correspondent quoting a local acting UNO and a UP member.

Jalal Ahmed, member of Ward 9 of Hwaikong Union Parishad, said the fire broke out shortly after 9:00pm. Fire brigade personnel brought the fire under control around 9:30pm. Hundreds of Rohingya houses made of bamboo and plastic were burnt.

Teknaf acting upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Erfanul Haque Chowdhury said the fire broke out at the women’s centre of an NGO in Chakmarkul Rohingya camp. The extent of the damage could not be known yet.

Earlier on April 18, at least 50 houses were burnt in a fire at the Leather Rohingya camp.

Earlier on March 5, 2,805 structures, including houses, were damaged in a fire at Balukhali-11 camp in Ukhiya affecting at least 15,925 Rohingyas.
