KATHMANDU – Chitwan National Park, the primary habitat for the one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tiger, and gharial crocodile in Nepal, offers a rich wildlife experience.

The park’s headquarters is in Kasara, and as visitors cross the Rapti River, they can often spot the rare gharial crocodile basking on small sandy mounds in the middle of the river.

Tourist jeeps heading west from Sauraha on jungle safaris frequently reach Kasara. A half-day safari typically concludes here, while full-day tours continue further west. The surrounding area boasts wetlands like Lamital, Tamor Tal, and Thapaliya Tal, along with dense sal forests and expansive grasslands.

Rhinos can often be seen grazing in these grasslands or resting under the shade of sal trees. Peacocks dance in the forest, while water birds dive into the lakes for fish. Herds of spotted deer (chital) are also a common sight, making Chitwan a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts.
