NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday held a productive meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, reaffirming the strong bilateral ties between India and Canada.
“We appreciated the significant momentum in our bilateral ties since our earlier meeting held during the G7 Summit hosted by Canada,” PM Modi said in a post on handle X, highlighting the positive outcome of the meeting. The two leaders agreed to further advance their relations in areas like trade, investment, technology, and innovation, energy, and education.
The meeting comes after months of efforts to reset ties strained by Canada’s allegations of India’s involvement in the killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in 2023. India had denied the allegations, and both countries have since worked to rebuild their relationship.
PM Modi and Carney had also announced a trilateral technology and innovation partnership with Australia, aiming to deepen collaboration in emerging technologies, clean energy, and AI.
The meeting is expected to pave the way for increased trade and investment between the two countries, with India inviting Carney to visit New Delhi for further talks.
The leaders also agreed to begin negotiations on a high-ambition Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), aimed at doubling bilateral trade to USD 50 billion by 2030. Both sides reaffirmed their longstanding civil nuclear cooperation and noted the ongoing discussions on expanding collaboration, including through long-term uranium supply arrangements.
