NEW DELHI – Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi has been hospitalised. The Congress parliamentary party chairperson was admitted to the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi at around 10:00 pm on Monday.

The hospital on Tuesday said the senior Congress leader was experiencing respiratory discomfort, following which she was brought to the facility.

Dr Ajay Swaroop, Chairman, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said in a statement that Sonia Gandhi was taken into care and a medical examination was conducted.

Following the medical check-up, the doctors found that the Congress leader’s bronchial asthma had mildly exacerbated due to the combined effects of cold weather and air pollution.

The Congress leader was then, as a precautionary measure, admitted to the hospital for further observation and treatment.

The Congress leader’s condition is currently said to be stable and she is responding well to the treatment being administered.

“At present, her condition is absolutely stable. She is responding well to treatment and is being managed with antibiotics and other supportive medications,” Dr Swaroop said.

Sonia Gandhi is likely to remain hospitalised for at least a day or two, the hospital stated.

“The decision regarding her discharge will be taken by the treating physicians based on her clinical progress and is likely in a day or two,” the hospital statement added.
