NEW DELHI – External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met visiting Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya in Delhi on Thursday. Jaishankar said they discussed India’s continued support to Sri Lanka and ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in education and capacity building.
Amarasuriya, on her part, highlighted the civilizational and cultural ties between the two countries, calling India “an unwavering partner in Sri Lanka’s journey.”
Referring to the economic crisis in Sri Lanka from 2019 to 2024, she said India’s support extended “a hand of a true friend in our darkest hours”.
In light of Amarasuriya expressing gratitude to India for supporting Sri Lanka during its economic crisis, it is worth noting that in June 2024, then Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe had stated that their country navigated two challenging years of economic crisis thanks to India’s financial support of USD 3.5 billion.
During her three-day visit to India, Amarasuriya also visited her alma mater, Hindu College, where she received a standing ovation from students and faculty. She recalled her college days, saying, “Entering through the same gates after three decades, I felt nostalgia and admiration… The college has transformed into a vibrant institution with smart classrooms, advanced labs, and thriving research initiatives, keeping pace with India’s rapid growth.”
She also called on the students to “always build bridges, don’t build barriers — at home, in the office, or between nations”.
Her visit is focused on strengthening bilateral ties between India and Sri Lanka and enhancing collaboration in education and capacity building.
Amarasuriya arrived in New Delhi today for high-level meetings and events following her visit to Beijing for the ‘Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women 2025.
During her three-day visit, her first since becoming the PM, Amarasuriya is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Officials said Amarasuriya will also engage with business chamber and industry representatives as India and Sri Lanka aim to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment and development.
