NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi wasted no time in addressing the flood situation in Punjab, calling Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann immediately after landing in Delhi from China.
According to government sources, the Prime Minister assured Mann of all possible help and support to the state, which has been grappling with severe flooding triggered by heavy rainfall.
The situation in Punjab remains grim, with several districts reeling under flash floods. The state government has taken measures to mitigate the damage, including deploying National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams.
CM Mann has also appealed to the people not to panic and assured them of all possible assistance.
Reports indicate that nearly three lakh acres of farmland, primarily paddy fields, remain submerged, causing devastating crop losses just weeks before the harvest. The Punjab government has sought additional assistance from the Army to combat the escalating crisis.
The Centre has constituted Inter-Ministerial Central Teams (IMCTs) to assess the damage caused by heavy rainfall, floods, and landslides in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir. These teams will conduct on-the-spot assessments of the situation and the relief work being carried out by state governments.
The Indian Army, NDRF, and SDRF are working tirelessly to rescue those affected.
In Pathankot, an NDRF team, with the assistance of an Air Force helicopter, rescued a victim trapped under the collapsed structure of Madhopur Dam. The government has also set up flood relief camps to provide aid to people displaced by the disaster.
