DHAKA – The Indian police today (April 13, 2022) arrested a Hindu seer who had allegedly made a hate speech and issued a “rape threat” to Muslim women in the Sitapur area of Uttar Pradesh state.

Bajrang Muni Das of Maharishi Shri Laxman Das Udasin Ashram has been apprehended 11 days after a purported video of the controversial seer making the hateful remarks against Muslim women surfaced, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) of Uttar Pradesh Prashant Kumar told PTI, reports our New Delhi correspondent.

He said that police arrested Das in Sitapur.

Bajrang Muni Das had allegedly made a hate speech against Muslims on April 2. A video of it later surfaced on social media platforms.

In the two-minute video of the speech made outside a mosque, he could be heard using the term “jehadi” to refer to a community and threatening them if any Hindu girl is harassed by any man of that community, he would himself rape their women.

A video of him apologising for his statement surfaced on Friday evening, hours after police lodged an FIR against him on April 8.

The National Commission for Women had sought “appropriate measures” by the police to curb people from using outrageous language against women.

Das, however, claimed the video was “distorted” to frame him under “false charges”.
