Infant formula recalled over toxin risk by Brunei food authority

The BDFA confirmed that all the affected brands or batches are not imported commercially into this country. However, those who have purchased the product overseas are advised to stop using the product immediately.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN – A voluntary recall of additional affected brands and batches of SMA infant formula and follow-on formula has been announced by Nestlé Global as a precautionary measure due to the potential presence of cereulide toxin, according to the Brunei Darussalam Food Authority (BDFA).

Cereulide is a toxin produced by the bacteria Bacillus cereus that causes gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhoea.

Symptoms develop within 30 minutes to six hours after consumption and usually resolve within a day; vulnerable groups such as infants and persons with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of developing complications. Those who have consumed the product and are unwell should seek prompt medical attention.

The details of the affected brands or batches of recalled product include SMA Advanced First Infant Milk (800g) batch-51450742F1, 52319722BA, 52819722AA – expiring May 2027, SMA Advanced Follow-on Milk (800g) with batch 52879722AA – expiring April 2027, batch 51240742F2 – expiring May 2027 and batch 51890742F2 expiring August 2027, SMA Anti Reflux (800g) batch 52099722BA – expiring April 2027 and batch 51570742F3, 52099722BB, 52739722BA – expiring June 2027.

Additionally, according to information received from a neighbouring country, two additional infant formula products have also been recalled as a precautionary measure due to the detection of cereulide toxin. The details of the affected brands or batches of recalled products are NAN HA 1 SupremePro (800g) batch 52340017C3 – expiring August 31, 2027 and Dumex Dulac 1 (800g) batch 101570778C expiring September 3, 2027.

The BDFA confirmed that all the affected brands or batches are not imported commercially into this country.

However, those who have purchased the product overseas and brought it into the country for personal use or purchased the product through an online platform are advised to stop using the product immediately. – JAMES KON
