Initial damage value of March 28 quake in Myanmar is estimated at US$1.8 million

NAYPYIDAY – The initial damage value of the earthquake in 10 regions and states, including Nay Pyi Taw Council, is 3,804.549 billion kyats, said Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NASKA).

The Chairman of the State Executive Council and Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing made the following remarks while delivering his speech at the second donation ceremony for the people affected by the Mandalay earthquake and for the rehabilitation work, held this afternoon (May 29) at the Bayintnaung Residence in Nay Pyi Taw.

The earthquake affected 374 wards, 944 village tracts, 2081 villages, 162167 households, and a total population of 506069 people in 10 regions and states, including Nay Pyi Taw Council, with 3739 deaths, 68 missing persons, and 5104 injured. The damage to houses, buildings, and other structures included 51210 houses, 431 road works, 103 bridges, 83 railway damage sites, and 11 railway bridges, 6730 mobile communication stations, 10 power lines, 3435 power line poles, 594 irrigation canals, 6 embankments, 11338 departmental buildings, 384 hospitals, 364 clinics, 166 ancient buildings and museums, 2409 basic education schools, 72 higher education schools, The Prime Minister, who is also the chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NAMA), said that 90 private schools, 6,469 pagodas, 5,588 monasteries, nunneries and other religious buildings, 344 private factories, 78.5 acres of crops, and 133,700 animals were damaged, with the total initial damage costing 3,804.549 billion kyats.

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) was opened on March 29, 2025, to respond to the earthquake, and the response activities were carried out systematically according to the working committees under the National Disaster Management Committee. The disaster victims are currently being provided with temporary shelter, drinking water needs, and basic food and consumer goods are being sold through street vendors, said the Prime Minister, Chairman of the National Disaster Management Committee.

In addition, urgent needs such as communication, electricity, and temporary shelter are being provided before the rain. Temporary health clinics have been opened to provide health care, necessary medical treatment, and surgery to the public. The Prime Minister, Chairman of the National Disaster Response Force, said that during such responses, the international community has opened the way for humanitarian assistance.

In addition, donations from the People’s Republic of China, India, the Russian Federation, AHA Centre, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Thailand, Indonesia, Pakistan, Belarus, Laos, Singapore Red Cross Society, Nepal, UAE, Brunei and Malaysia are being distributed to the needy people in the earthquake-affected areas without delay, said the Prime Minister, Chairman of the National Disaster Response Force (NADF).

The Prime Minister, who is also the Chairman of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), said that he personally visited the earthquake-stricken areas and the injured patients being treated in hospitals after the earthquake on March 28. He has visited the earthquake-stricken areas a total of 15 times to date and provided necessary assistance and guidance. He also identified five levels of search and rescue operations, and fully involved local forces. In addition, he carried out emergency search and rescue operations in cooperation with search and rescue teams from foreign countries. As a result of such operations, 653 people trapped in buildings were rescued alive and 806 dead were identified and recovered.
