YANGON – “According to sources, Thandwe Township in Rakhine State is witnessing intense fighting between the Tatmadaw (military) and the Arakan Army (AA).
As a result, nearby residents are fleeing the area. Since early June, dwellers and villagers have sought safer places to hide.
On Saturday, even those who remained in the downtown area began avoiding the war zone. Displaced persons, who previously sought shelter at monasteries in Thandwe, are now fleeing to villages in the southern part of the township. Concerns about food shortages persist as rice supplies dwindle.
“In May, hotels and motels in Thandwe and Ngapali Beach ceased operations. The State Administration Council (SAC) closed Thandwe Airport during the first week of May, and subsequently, private airlines were prohibited from operating.
While news about the Arakan Army (AA) seizing Thandwe Airport has been circulating on social media, no official confirmation has been provided.
Telegram channels reported fighting near Thandwe Airport on June 23, but the alleged seizure remains unverified. The SAC has not issued any announcements regarding the Thandwe conflict.”
