MANILA – Two months after its streaming debut, “KPop Demon Hunters” broke the record of “Red Notice” — a comedy-action film starring Gal Gadot, Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds — to be Netflix’s most-watched film.
The animated film, which tells the story of HUNTR/X’s double lives as K-pop superstars and demon slayers, garnered over 236 million views, according to the streaming service on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
“Their #1 era. With 236 million views, ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ is officially the most popular Netflix film of all time,” the post read.
Meanwhile, “Red Notice” has an overall viewership of 230.9 million, according to a Forbes report.
The continuing success of “KPop Demon Hunters” comes days after the film topped the US Box Office during its limited “sing-along” run in theaters. It was also named the streamer’s most-streamed animated film last July.
The film’s soundtrack — which includes the smash hit “Golden” and other chart-topping singles “Soda Pop,” “Your Idol,” “Takedown,” “How It’s Done,” “Free” and “What It Sounds Like” — has been making a strong appearance on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts and UK Official Singles chart, to name a few.
Sequel is moving ahead
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures is currently in talks with Netflix for an animated sequel.
The talks have been said to be going “smoothly,” touching on the “built-in bond” between the streaming platform and the production company’s animation. Netflix’s head of film Dan Lin also gave a shout-out to the film’s co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, as well as “Kristine Belson and her team at Sony Animation” as their studio partner.
It remains unknown if an animated sequel will indeed take place, as both studios have kept their lips sealed on the ongoing developments.
The animated film stars Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Yunjin Kim, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong and Lee Byung-hun.
Meanwhile, Ejae, Andrew Choi, Audrey Nuna, Rei Ami, Samuil Lee, Kevin Woo, Neckwav and Danny Chung provided the singing voices of the members of Huntr/x (or Huntrix) and Saja Boys.
