VIENTIANE – Laos, Mongolia sign seven cooperation agreements
The leaders of Laos and Mongolia on Monday signed seven cooperation documents, aiming to build ties in economic affairs, trade, investment and tourism.
The signing of the agreements in Vientiane was witnessed by Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith and his visiting Mongolian counterpart Khurelsukh Ukhnaa.
President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa and his delegation arrived in Vientiane on Sunday for a state visit to Laos in response to an invitation from President Thongloun. The visit aims to enhance the longstanding friendly relations between the two countries.
The two presidents discussed ways to expand their cooperative relations, especially in relation to economic development, trade, investment, education, health, agriculture, culture and tourism.
They also agreed to support one another in the regional and international arenas for the benefit of both countries.
The two presidents spoke highly of the growing friendly relations and cooperation between their countries over the past six decades since the establishment of diplomatic ties on September 12, 1962.
The leaders agreed to deepen their collaboration, particularly by arranging reciprocal visits by high-level delegations from their countries and supporting one another in the regional and international arenas.
Last year, Laos and Mongolia marked the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations, with a number of activities organised to celebrate this event.
President Thongloun thanked Mongolia for supporting Laos in past years, particularly Mongolia’s support for improvements to the Laos-Mongolia Hospital in Xieng Khuang province and the donation of 1,050 sheep in 2018.
He also informed his Mongolian counterpart about Visit Laos Year 2024, designed to attract more tourists from around the world including from Mongolia.
As Laos assumes the chair of Asean chair, the Lao President invited businesses in Mongolia to invest in areas of potential in Laos, especially in relation to developments in agriculture, logistics and transportation along the route of the Laos-China Railway.
During his visit, President Ukhnaa also met Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone to further discuss cooperation.
The Lao premier asked the Mongolian president to strengthen trade and investment cooperation by assisting arrangements for the private sectors of the two countries to meet and discuss possible partnerships.
Also yesterday, President Ukhnaa met with the President of the National Assembly, Xaysomphone Phomvihane, to further discuss cooperation.
