Magnitude 7.7 earthquake hits Japan’s Tohoku region; tsunami warning issued

The highest wave recorded in the area so far was 40 centimeters at 5:21 p.m.

TOKYO – A magnitude 7.7 earthquake hit the Tohoku region at 4:53 p.m. on Monday.

A tsunami warning was issued on Hokkaido and Iwate and Aomori prefectures, with a predicted height of three meters.

The first wave was observed at 5:10 p.m. in Miyako, Iwate Prefecture. The highest wave recorded in the area so far was 40 centimeters at 5:21 p.m.

At Kuji Port in Iwate Prefecture, the first wave was observed at 5:26 p.m., and the highest wave was 80 centimeters at 5:34 p.m.

The epicenter was off the Sanriku Coast.

Upper 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 was recorded in Hashikami, Aomori Prefecture. Lower 5 was recorded in Iwate and Miyagi prefectures.

The Japan Meteorological Agency revised the earthquake’s magnitude from 7.5 to 7.7 at 7:30 p.m.
