Malaysia-bound trawler capsize: Death toll increases to 6

DHAKA – The death toll from the trawler capsize in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf upazila on October 4, 2022 has increased to six, following the recovery of the bodies of two Rohingya women last night (October 5, 2022).

Of the deceased, five were females and a child, reports our Cox’s Bazar staff correspondent quoting Inspector Nur Mohammad, in-charge of Baharchara Police Investigation Centre.

After being informed by local fishermen, police recovered the bodies of the two women from south Shilkhali and Chowkidar Para beaches of Baharchara union of Teknaf upazila around 11pm yesterday, said the police official.

Efforts are on to identify the identity the two deceased, aged between 30-35 years, said the inspector.

The bodies of three women recovered earlier from sea after the trawler capsized, were handed over to their families, he added.

The trawler capsized in the deep sea off the coast of Hormunia Para of Baharchara union in the early hours of October 4.

Bangladesh Coast Guard recovered bodies of three Rohingya women and one child and rescued 45 others who were crossing the sea to make entry to Malaysia.
