SINGAPORE – Malaysian rapper Wee Meng Chee, better known as Namewee, will be offered bail when his detention linked to the murder probe of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh ends on Nov 13, said Malaysia’s attorney-general.
Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar said on Nov 12 that police investigations have not yielded any leads linking Namewee to the death, local media reported.
He said the Attorney-General’s Chambers will take the appropriate action if investigations reveal new findings, adding that a statement will be issued on Nov 13.
The remand period for the rapper is expected to end on Nov 13, having already been extended on Nov 10.
The police are awaiting the full post-mortem report to determine the exact cause of Ms Hsieh’s death.
Wee, 42, who was in the hotel room where the 31-year-old Taiwanese influencer was found dead in a bathtub on Oct 22, is assisting with investigations. The police have said the two shared a “special relationship”, without offering details.
The case, initially classified as a sudden death, was later reclassified and investigated as a murder.
Wee turned himself in on Nov 5 at the Dang Wangi police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
He has also been charged with drug use and possession, having tested positive for amphetamines, methamphetamine, ketamine, and the cannabis derivative THC.
The next court mention for his drug offences is on Dec 18.
