VIENTIANE – Political stability, clear policies as well as willingness by the people to make crucial changes, are among the reasons behind Malaysia’s improving economic prospects, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said politicians, civil servants and the private sector have accepted that crucial changes must be made in Malaysia in order for the country to progress further.

“That is why a paradigm shift is crucial. They understand what this means and they try to implement that shift.

“If we do not carry out meaningful changes, Malaysia will return to a gloomy and sluggish situation from an economic point of view,” said Anwar during a dinner hosted by the Malaysian Ambassador to Laos on Wednesday (Oct 9).

Anwar also said that with the current political stability, civil servants should improve the quality of governance

“Because, no country with any amount of wealth in the world can uphold the dignity of the people and the nation without a responsible administration,” added Anwar.

Anwar also said foreign investors were returning to Malaysia because of its clear policies such as the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030), the National Energy Transition Roadmap and among others.

“This convinces foreign investors because when they are here, they want to see how efficient we are.

“So far, we have made crucial changes. But, as I have always said, there is room for changes,” said Anwar.

Anwar was present in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, from Oct 8 to 11 to lead a high-level delegation to the 44th and 45th Asean Summit and Related Summits.

According to Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), the country registered a 5.9% growth in Q2 this year and it is attributed to stronger household spending, business investments and exports.

The 44th and 45th Asean Summit and Related Summit will conclude this Friday (Oct 11) with Laos handing over the chairmanship of Asean to Malaysia.
