NEW DELHI – A man died after being crushed by a tree that fell during heavy rainfall near South Delhi’s Nehru Place Metro station, said the police, reported news agency UNI on Thursday.

According to UNI, a tree collapsed onto several vehicles during heavy rain in the capital, causing chaos. Tragically, it struck a biker and his daughter riding pillion, on their way home.

The biker was crushed to death under the fallen tree. Police told UNI that both were rushed to the hospital, where the daughter was being treated.

Heavy showers lashed Delhi and the NCR — including Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad — early Thursday, offering respite from the heat but also causing widespread waterlogging and traffic snarls in low-lying areas.

Intense downpours were recorded in Lajpat Nagar, RK Puram, Lodhi Road, and along the Delhi-Haryana border, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to upgrade its alert from ‘yellow’ to ‘red’ for the day.

Rainfall is expected to persist in the capital till August 17, according to weather office sources. Outer Ring Road near Subroto Park and Basai Road in Gurugram were among the worst hit, with vehicles crawling through flooded stretches.

Moderate showers were reported from India Gate, Kartavya Path, Punjabi Bagh, Vasant Vihar, and parts of Noida, while heavy clouds kept the skies overcast across the region.
