ULAANBAATAR – According to the amendment to the law on parliamentary elections, parties nominated women for 30% of the total seats, and for the first time in history, 519 female candidates nominated their names in this year’s parliamentary election.

In the Parliamentary election 2012, 11 or 14.4% of the total members were female, while in 2016, 13 female members worked in the parliament. But only 2% of independent candidates, and up to 60% of party and coalition candidates are women.

In Mongolia, Parliamentary elections have been held eight times since 1992. In 1992, there were 293 candidates, four of whom were women candidates. And three of them, or 75%, were elected.

In 2020, out of 606 candidates, 151 of them were women, 13 of them were elected, or 17.1%. It can be seen that the number of candidates has increased, but the percentage of candidates elected is low.

126 MEMBERS WERE ELECTED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE PARLIAMENT, OF WHICH 94 MALE AND 32 FEMALE MEMBERS WILL WORK IN 2024-2028

There were a total 608 members who worked in 8 parliamentary elections, 544 were men and 64 were women, or the record number of women in the Parliament in the past 32 years was 13 or 17.1%. This was the result of the 2016 and 2020 elections following the establishment of a gender quota of 20% and the consistent and continuous support of women’s political participation at the policy level by all parties in society.

In 2024, 19 parties, 2 alliances and 1341 candidates registered in the ninth regular election of the Parliament, which was the largest number of parties, alliances and candidates in the history of the parliamentary elections. 126 members, 48 of which by proportional representation, and 78 by majority representation, were elected. A total of 32 female members increased the historical record by 8% to 25%.

According to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Mongolia ranked 129th out of 190 countries with 17 female members. After 32 newly elected female members, Mongolia will reach 96th-99th place, and it has fulfilled the conditions for moving forward by 27-30 places.

According to the International Institute for Democracy and Election Support, elections will be held in 73 countries around the world in 2024, and as of today, elections have been held in 35 countries, and about 1 billion 210 million people have participated in the elections. According to the National Committee on Gender, Mongolia’s position may change based on the number of women in the Parliament, depending on the results of the elections in 38 countries this year.
