ULAANBAATAR – In response to a significant rise in alcohol-related crimes and traffic violations, the National Police Agency has announced a nationwide “Alcohol-Free New Year” campaign running from December 8 to December 31, 2025.

The initiative aims to curb alcohol abuse during the holiday season, educate the public on legal risks, and prevent accidents and injuries typically associated with New Year celebrations.

According to police data from the first 11 months of 2025, alcohol remains a major driver of criminal activity: 44,581 crimes were registered nationwide, 7,063 of these crimes (15.8%) were committed under the influence of alcohol, this represents a 9.4% increase in alcohol-related crimes compared to the same period last year.

The consequences of alcohol abuse have placed a heavy burden on law enforcement and health services:

  • 34,755 people were detained for sobering up.

  • 10,972 individuals were detained.

  • 570 people entered addiction treatment programs (269 compulsory, 301 voluntary).

Authorities noted a sharp rise in violations by both businesses and individuals. Violations by responsible business entities (e.g., bars, shops) jumped by 42.9%, while violations by individual citizens surged by 58.1%.

Therefore, 22,098 incidents of driving under the influence were recorded, resulting in license revocations. 5,317 drivers were arrested and detained for periods ranging from 7 to 30 days.

To enforce the “Alcohol-Free New Year” campaign, the police and internal military organizations have deployed significant resources: 716 officers are currently deployed across 358 specific routes to monitor public order, 345 officers from the Transport Police Service are patrolling 168 routes to combat drunk driving crimes and violations.

Inspections will focus on businesses selling and serving alcohol to ensure compliance with laws, specifically targeting the sale of alcohol to individuals under 21 and the employment of minors. Establishments found in violation will face strict legal accountability.

The Police Department urges all citizens to follow the law and celebrate the New Year responsibly, prioritizing the safety of themselves and their families.
