NEW DELHI – The ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament has been a whirlwind of heated debates, frequent disruptions, and relentless demands from the Opposition. While Opposition parties have been pressing for urgent discussions on several contentious issues, the government has sought to highlight its recent achievements.
So far, the session has been dominated by persistent disruptions, with the Opposition demanding a detailed discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, citing large-scale voter deletions and alleged irregularities.
The government, on its part, has showcased successes in counter-terrorism operations, with Home Minister Amit Shah informing the Rajya Sabha about Operation Mahadev and Operation Sindoor. The Opposition, however, has sharply criticized the government’s handling of terrorism-related matters.
The Congress party has reiterated its demand for the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and the extension of Schedule VI status to Ladakh. Concerns over the situation in Manipur have also been prominently raised.
Both Houses of Parliament devoted 16 hours to debating Operation Sindoor. Meanwhile, parties in the INDIA bloc held a virtual meeting to coordinate their strategy for the remainder of the session, signalling their unity and resolve to challenge the government.
The Monsoon Session is scheduled to run until August 21, with a recess from August 12 to August 18. Despite continued disruptions, the government has managed to pass key legislation in the Lok Sabha, including the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill, 2024—reserving seats in the Goa Legislative Assembly for Scheduled Tribes—and the Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024, aimed at transforming India’s maritime sector.
