Myanmar government to provide over 5 million bags of cement to repair houses damaged by March earthquake

Market fairs in the capital Nay Pyi Taw and Mandalay will be held to make cement easily available for purchase and use by the public.

YANGON – The Director-General of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement made the announcement at the 3rd (3/2025) coordination meeting of the Myanmar Cement Manufacturers Association held at the meeting room of the Ministry of Industry, Office No. (30) on July 1, that 5.344 million bags of cement will be provided to repair houses damaged by the powerful earthquake.

Before the meeting, the Director General of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement discussed that 5.344 million bags of cement will be provided from the National Disaster Management Committee funds to repair the homes of people who were damaged by the Mandalay earthquake that struck on March 28 in 54 townships in eight regions/states, including the Union Territory of Nay Pyi Taw.

Afterwards, the Chairman of the Myanmar Cement Manufacturers Association discussed that in order to reduce transportation costs for consumers, they will coordinate with local cement factories to produce and distribute cement. They said that they will hold market fairs in Nay Pyi Taw and Mandalay to make cement easily available for purchase and use by the public. They will also discuss that they will make arrangements to produce cement when needed in eight regions/states.

Afterwards, the Myanmar Cement Manufacturers Association held a coordination meeting, and the Union Minister said that in order to help the damaged factories and workshops to operate as soon as possible, he visited the factories and workshops to find out the damaged conditions and to effectively meet the needs, and to provide timely assistance in obtaining spare parts and raw materials. He also said that the Myanmar Cement Manufacturers Association and officials from cement factories should report any difficulties they encounter during production activities.

The Chairman of the Myanmar Cement Manufacturers Association discussed the difficulties faced by cement factories in carrying out production activities, the difficulties faced by cement factory officials in carrying out production activities, distribution and sales, and the situation of the ministry representatives participating in the Cement Manufacturers Association in providing assistance to meet the needs of factories. The Deputy Director General of the Department of Industrial Cooperation discussed the methods that should be taken to transfer cement production technologies, and the participants discussed the measures that should be taken to ensure the production of high-quality cement.

The meeting was attended by Union Minister for Industry Dr. Charlie Than, Deputy Minister U Yin Maung Nyunt, Directors-General, Deputy Directors-General of related ministries, Chairman, Vice Chairman, Executives of the Myanmar Cement Manufacturers Association, officials from cement factories, and officials from the Ministry of Industry.
