NAY PYI TAW – A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Myanmar and India on Tuesday (January 21) to support three development projects, including assistance in the rehabilitation of drug addicts.
The signing ceremony was held in Nay Pyi Taw and was attended by Dr. San San Aye, Director General of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, Myanmar, and Shri Ashish Sharma, Deputy Head of the Indian Embassy in Myanmar, India.
The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Myanmar and India on support for three new small-scale development projects of the Indian government aims to support gender-based livelihoods and marginalized sectors of society by linking them with skills-based interventions, with a special focus on social infrastructure, the Indian Embassy in Myanmar said.
Two of these projects involve providing vocational training and classroom infrastructure to Home Science Schools in ten (10) states and regions in Myanmar. The projects will be spread across eleven (11) major cities including Yangon, Mandalay, Mawlamyine, Taungoo, Myitkyina, Pyay, Pathein, Shan, Sittwe, Hakha and Dawei.
Similarly, the third project will focus on opening vocational training courses and providing educational support for the rehabilitation of drug addicts in five states and regions, including Yangon, Mandalay, Kachin, Shan, and Kayin States.
The Indian Embassy in Myanmar stated that the Indian Government remains committed to supporting high-impact community development infrastructure in Myanmar, with the Framework Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for India’s assistance for implementation of micro-development projects signed on 27 July 2010 and renewed twice on 28 July 2015 and 28 July 2020.
Under the Micro-Development Project (MDP), the Government of India is extending support to impactful projects, including the upgrading of the Women and Children’s Hospital in Monywa, Sagaing Region, the provision of computers to the Sittwe Computer University in Rakhine State, and the provision of tractors and rice harvesters to Rakhine State. These sponsorships are part of our ongoing efforts to support the development of women, children and marginalized communities in Myanmar, the Indian Embassy in Myanmar said.
