YANGON – At the invitation of the Union Minister for Foreign Affairs, U Tin Maung Swe, the Indonesian Foreign Minister, Mr. Sugiono, and his wife, accompanied by an Indonesian delegation, paid an official visit to Nay Pyi Taw on June 8, 2026.
The Union Minister for Foreign Affairs received the Indonesian Foreign Minister and his delegation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the afternoon of June 8.
During the meeting, the foreign ministers of the two countries discussed ways to further strengthen the long-standing traditional friendship between Myanmar and Indonesia, enhance cooperation to open a new chapter in bilateral relations, including diplomatic relations, promote cooperation in the region and internationally, including ASEAN, and enhance economic cooperation and cooperation in areas that will benefit both countries.
In addition, the Union Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed his gratitude for Indonesia’s positive welcome to Myanmar’s peace process and political developments, and said that cooperation between the two foreign ministries will be enhanced. Myanmar is participating in cooperation with ASEAN as a responsible member country and will continue to work with Myanmar’s own Myanmar-led process that is consistent with our country. He acknowledged and thanked Indonesia and ASEAN member countries for understanding and supporting Myanmar’s positive developments. He also expressed his hope that Indonesia will continue to support Myanmar’s human resource development, including by providing scholarships.
The Indonesian Foreign Minister said that Indonesia will continue to enhance its existing relations with Myanmar. Indonesia recognizes the efforts made in Myanmar to achieve peace, national reconciliation and democracy with the emergence of a new government through elections. Indonesia recognizes the implementation of the five ASEAN statements through Myanmar’s own process led by Myanmar. Myanmar has been a member of ASEAN for many years and therefore wants Myanmar to continue to participate in ASEAN’s activities. Indonesia understands the challenges faced by a multi-ethnic society like Myanmar and is willing to participate in Myanmar’s peace process. Indonesia wants to enhance cooperation in the areas of economy, education, health, people-to-people exchanges and humanitarian assistance.”
