YANGON – The nationwide state of emergency has been extended by six months.
The National Defense and Security Council meeting (1/2025) of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar was held on January 31, 10 am at the meeting hall of the Office of the Chairman of the State Executive Council in Nay Pyi Taw.
The meeting was attended by Acting President (Acting), Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw U T Khun Myat, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services, Commander-in-Chief (Army) Vice Senior General Soe Win, Union Minister for Defence General Maung Maung Aye, Union Minister for Home Affairs Lt-Gen Ya Pyae, Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Than Swe, Union Minister for Border Affairs Lt-Gen Tun Tun Naung, and specially invited Secretary of the State Planning Council General Aung Lin Dway and Joint Secretary General Ye Win Oo .
At the meeting, the Acting President (Acting), Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services reviewed the state’s defense and security situation, the State Executive Council has been focusing on the country’s stability and development since it began its duties, the implementation of two political goals, namely, strengthening a genuine and disciplined multi-party democracy and building a union based on democracy and federalism, the efforts being made to increase the production of agricultural and livestock products, the efforts being made to promote the education sector to accelerate the country’s development, the efforts being made to promote the health sector as education can be provided and social and economic activities can be carried out through health, the assistance provided by the state for the rehabilitation of areas affected by natural disasters, the efforts being made by the State Executive Council to end the armed conflicts in the country and achieve lasting peace since it began its duties.
The conditions of the construction of a federal system based on a strong multi-party democracy and democratic principles, the preparations for holding a free and fair multi-party democratic general election, and the implementation of the population and housing census to obtain valid and accurate voter lists for the election were explained, and it was found that there is still work to be done to successfully hold the general election that we all aim for. In particular, since there is still a need for peace and stability to ensure that a free and fair general election can be held, the government has requested an extension of the term of office for another 6 months to continue the work required without losing momentum.
After that, the members of the National Defense and Security Council and specially invited guests discussed the presentation of the Acting President (Acting) and Commander-in-Chief of the Defense Forces. All members of the National Defense and Security Council, including the Acting President (Acting) and Commander-in-Chief of the Defense Forces, unanimously decided to “extend the period of the nationwide state of emergency for another 6 months” in accordance with Article 425 of the Constitution (2008) and adjourned the National Defense and Security Council Meeting (1/2025) of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.
