NAYPYIDAW – Yangon – Nay Pyi Daw route will be operated from February 28 using new modern DEMU train cars purchased from Japan , according to the Ministry of Transport and Communications .
The Ministry of Transport and Communications, Myanmar Railways, is planning to operate passenger train services on the main railway lines such as Yangon – Mandalay, Yangon – Pyay , Yangon – Mawlamyine, and Yangon Ring Road and Suburbs, as well as other lines such as Pathein – Hinthada – Kinkhin, Pyinmana – Taungdwingyi, Yangon – Pyay – Bagan, Myitkyina – Moe Kaung, Letpadan – Tharawa, and Tharsi – Shwe Nyaung. Starting from February 28 , the Nay Pyi Taw – Yangon – Nay Pyi Taw route will be operated with new modern DEMU train sets purchased from Japan .
The modern DEMU train set departed from Nay Pyi Taw Station at 8:00 am on February 21 as a test run from Nay Pyi Taw to Yangon . It was carried by 130 tourists, including private entrepreneurs from various companies and organizations that had come to Nay Pyi Taw for the Myanmar Food Industry Development Forum 2025 ( MSME ) . It arrived at Yangon Station at 1:50 pm . The journey time from Nay Pyi Taw to Yangon , including stops at various stations, took 5 hours and 50 minutes .
The DEMU train, which will start operating on the upgraded Yangon – Nay Pyi Taw railway section on February 28 , will be able to carry 312 passengers in six carriages, including four first-class and two upper-class carriages. The Nay Pyi Taw – Mandalay air-conditioned train will be able to carry 330 passengers in six carriages, including four ordinary-class and two upper-class carriages. The train schedule and ticket prices will be announced by Myanma Railways .
Passengers will be able to change trains between the DEMU and the airbag trains at Nay Pyi Taw Station .
Along the Yangon – Mandalay route, the train will stop at Bago, Phyu, Taungoo, Nay Pyi Taw, and Thashi stations . Myanmar Railways is making efforts to replenish / produce modern passenger coaches, upgrade railway lines, and upgrade stations to ensure that train passengers can travel comfortably .
