JOHOR BARU – A total of 122 individuals, including a local man, were detained in separate operations at two entertainment outlets and an area near a cemetery here.
Johor Immigration Department director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said the first operation began at 2am on Sunday (Sept 28), following intelligence and public tip-offs about undocumented migrants suspected of staying near a cemetery here.
“During the raid, dozens of foreigners were stranded after failing to flee the area that had been surrounded by enforcement officers.
“This led to the arrest of 104 foreigners for various offences including not having valid travel documents and overstaying their permits.
“Those arrested included a Philippine woman, while the rest were Indonesians, aged between two months and 63 years,” he said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the second operation was carried out at 11pm on Saturday at two entertainment outlets around Johor Baru.
“Two weeks of surveillance led to the arrest of a local man, believed to be the premises’ manager, along with 17 foreigners suspected of working as entertainment workers and cleaners.
“The detained foreigners comprised four Bangladeshi men, four Indonesian men and nine Chinese women, aged between 18 and 44,” he said.
Mohd Rusdi added that eight form 28 summonses were issued to witnesses to assist in the investigation.
“All detainees are now being held at the Setia Tropika immigration depot for investigation and further action.
“They are suspected of committing offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Immigration Regulations 1963,” he added.
