PENANG – Penang bar Backdoor Bodega has become the first bar from the state to be named in the 51-100 list by the Asia Best 50 Bars.
It came in at No. 97, and is joined on the list by Kuala Lumpur bars Three X Co (No. 70) and Coley (No. 100).
Located in the heart of George Town, Penang, Backdoor Bodega is a bar with a unique concept. Calling itself an ‘overpriced pin shop’, patrons purchase lapel pins at the outlet, which come with a complimentary cocktail.
Backdoor Bodega also made the news last year when it came up with bottled cocktails named after the various Covid-19 vaccines during the MCO period.
The main Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2022 awards ceremony will be held next week (April 28) in Bangkok. Last year, three bars from Malaysia made the top 50 – Bar Trigona, JungleBird, and Three X Co.
This is only the second time the extended 51- 100 list has been published by Asia’s Best 50, and the ranking is created from the overall Asia’s 50 Best Bars voting process. This year’s 51-100 list includes bars spanning 24 different cities across Asia. Japan and Singapore lead the way with nine bars each on the list, Hong Kong with five, while Bangkok, Seoul and Taipei have four each. This is also the first time that a bar from Nepal has made the list, with Blackbird in Kathmandu coming in at No.96
The seventh edition of Asia’s 50 Best Bars will be announced on 28 April. The live ceremony and run-through of the list will begin at 7.30pm local time in Bangkok (8.30pm Malaysia), culminating with the announcement of The Best Bar in Asia.
Bar and cocktail enthusiasts the world over are invited to join those attending live in Bangkok in a digital countdown of the list of Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2022, through The World’s 50 Best Bars Facebook and 50 Best Bars TV YouTube Channel.
