GEORGE TOWN – Hean Char Koay Teow in Pulau Tikus has been crowned the new champion of Char Koay Teow in Penang.
The stall, run by Ong Siew Kean, 53, who is better known as Winny Ong, received the honour during a competition featuring 30 participants held at the Toi Shan Ningyang Wui Kwon, a clan temple on King Street, on Sunday (June 1).
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow awarded the prizes.
The second place went to Chin Foh Shin from Taman Tanjung Aman, while the third place was claimed by Khoo Kay Keat from Kong Long Char Koay Teow.
A panel of six judges evaluated the dishes based on presentation, aroma and taste.
Participants were provided with ingredients such as prawns, eggs, bean sprouts, and noodles, but each contestant brought their own sauce and cockles.
The competition was jointly organised by the Village Community Management Council of Padang Kota and Jalan Transfer/Jalan Argyll, along with the Toi Shan Ningyang Association and promoted by the Kwangtung and Tengchow Association Penang.
