Philippine military on red alert as various groups set rallies against corruption

MANILA – All units of the Armed Forces of the Philippines  are on red alert amid protests against corruption, AFP Spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla said in a dzBB interview on Sunday.

According to Padilla, the AFP has been placed on red alert since September 12.

A red alert status over the AFP puts a number of personnel on standby, and personnel leaves on hold.

Padilla, however, reassured that the status is simply a safeguard and a way to support the Philippine National Police.

“This is a precautionary measure on our part. This is standard security protocols. We would like to emphasize that we have nothing to worry about,” Padilla said in Filipino.

At the start of September, rallies were held in different parts of the country, most of which protested against the alleged anomalous flood-control projects.

More protests are scheduled in the following weeks with a massive protest in Rizal Park on September 21 at 9 a.m. on the anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law, various groups announced.

Transport group Manibela announced on Sunday that it will hold a three-day transport strikes from September 17 to 19. Another transport group, Piston, will also stage a transport strike against corruption on September 18.
