MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) is stepping up its monitoring of online gaming platforms, including Roblox, to detect potential criminal activity and prevent online child exploitation.
The move follows reports that predators have allegedly used Roblox’s interactive features to target minors.
In a statement on Sunday, PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. said he has already ordered the Anti-Cybercrime Group to intensify surveillance of gaming platforms to thwart illegal activities.
Nartatez added that the PNP is working with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) to probe alleged unlawful activities on Roblox.
“The PNP is coordinating with other agencies, such as the DICT and the CICC, to investigate the extent to which Roblox may be used for possible crimes, including sexual predation, grooming, and exploitation of minors,” said Nartatez.
“We will not allow our children to be exposed and exploited in this kind of online environment,” he added.
The CICC has reportedly given Roblox until the end of the month to report the safety measures it is implementing for children, as part of a broader government effort to secure online platforms for minors.
The PNP said its monitoring extends beyond Roblox to other gaming and social platforms.
Nartatez emphasized that platforms with large numbers of minors are of particular concern due to risks of child exploitation.
“Our mandate of serving and protecting the people now encompasses cyberspace to keep them safe, especially for children. This is what modern policing also means and your PNP has been keeping up,” said Nartatez. /gsg
