Philippine state palace: First Family open to lifestyle check

These remarks came after the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism revealed that Ilocos Norte’s 1st District, which Rep. Marcos represents, received allocable funds twice the budget of the first district of Rizal, which is the country’s most populated legislative district.

MANILA – Malacañang on Tuesday maintained that the House Majority Leader Sandro Marcos and the rest of the first Family will be open to a lifestyle check, following allegations of corruption.

These remarks came after the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) revealed that Ilocos Norte’s 1st District, which Rep. Marcos represents, received allocable funds twice the budget of the first district of Rizal, which is the country’s most populated legislative district.

“Alam naman po ng Pangulo na alam ni Congressman Sandro Marcos ang kanyang ginagawa at alam niya po kung paano ito sasagutin,” Palace Press Officer Usec. Claire Castro said at a briefing when asked for a reaction on the PCIJ report.

(The President knows that Congressman Sandro Marcos knows what he is doing, and he also knows how to address it.)

“Open po [yes], even before,” she also said when asked if the first family will be open to a lifestyle check.

Castro said she cannot give a comment on the report on behalf of Rep. Marcos.

“At sabi naman po niya [Rep. Marcos], siya po ang nagboluntaryo, kung anuman po ang issue sa kaniya, siya mismo ang pupunta sa ICI para maimbestigahan po siya. Bigyan lamang po siya ng date para po magkaroon ng tamang schedule,” she said.

(And he [Rep. Marcos] said that he himself volunteered—whatever issue there may be against him, he will personally go to the ICI to be investigated. He only asks to be given a date so that a proper schedule can be set.)

Castro, during a Palace briefing last August, said the President and the rest of the government’s executive branch are prepared to undergo a lifestyle check as part of the ongoing investigation into anomalous flood control projects.

Castro stressed that Marcos is committed to holding accountable officials, including politicians, found involved in the corruption scandal.
