BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN – Brunei’s 10th year of the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR) drew about 161 registered local riders to participate in the global annual event to raise awareness for prostate cancer and men’s mental health on Sunday.
Ride host Azim Ghani in his speech noted that it was a privilege for him to be able to host the ride.
Azim highlighted the motivation behind the initiative, saying, “The drive to raise funds for men’s health stems from knowing that these issues are often overlooked. We wanted to raise awareness not only for the men who may be silently suffering but also for their friends and families.”
This year’s ride flagged off from a cafe in Menglait, Gadong, with the convoy making its way from Jalan Kiulap to Jalan Kumbang Pasang before arriving at their first stop at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas.
From there, the riders passed the Islamic Da’wah Centre in Kampong Pulaie and continued on the Mentiri Highway, crossing the Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Bridge to reach the Temburong monument for a pit stop. On their return to the capital, riders passed through Kota Batu, Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque and into Kampong Kiulap before regrouping at their final pit stop, Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah and returning to the cafe.
In line with DGR events worldwide, Brunei’s ride also served as a fundraising effort, raising a total of BND2,832. Top fundraisers included Aya Foo, who collected USD1,039, Aqilah Tali with USD452 and Muhammad Ibrahim Aziz Abdullah William with USD439. The DGR began in Sydney in 2012, inspired by an image of Don Draper riding a classic bike in a suit. The goal was to bring together classic and vintage motorcycle enthusiasts to raise awareness on prostate cancer.
