PHNOM PENH – Russia and Cambodia have maintained a “friendly alliance” to enhance their bilateral ties, according to the Russian embassy in Phnom Penh. Over the past three decades, the two nations have signed more than 40 agreements in various fields, including economics, politics, security, education, culture, trade relations, infrastructure, science and public organisations.
Russian ambassador Anatoly Borovik highlighted the significance of these accords during a news conference at the embassy in Phnom Penh. He acknowledged the need for further efforts to promote cooperation in certain areas and emphasised the importance of effectively implementing the signed documents.
Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, Borovik expressed optimism about the future of Russian-Cambodian relations. He underscored the continuous efforts to forge new agreements that would enhance the potential of the bilateral partnership. Borovik also highlighted the longstanding relationship between the two nations, mentioning the approval of, among others, their joint statement at the foreign ministerial meeting during the ASEAN summits.
The joint statement aimed to establish a political dialogue and foster regular relationships between inter-parliamentary governments, local authorities and political parties. Furthermore, Borovik outlined the intention to expand mutual cooperation in trade and investment, science and technology, education and culture, defence and security. He also stressed the support for key international and regional issues, such as strengthening ASEAN centrality and expanding multilateral cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.
The 67th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Cambodia was celebrated by the Russian embassy and Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on May 13. When questioned about Russia’s stance on Cambodia’s upcoming parliamentary election in July, Borovik expressed confidence in the Cambodian people’s exercise of their right to freedom of expression. He wished Cambodia success in the election, emphasising the significance of national election in the life of any country.
When asked for comments on the recent telephone conversation between Prime Minister Hun Sen and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the ambassador highlighted Russia’s respect for Cambodia’s intention to develop relations with all countries.
