NHA TRANG – Authorities are investigating an incident in which a member of the local traffic police unit in the beach town Nha Trang was assaulted by a man of Russian nationality while on duty on Thursday, resulting in an injury to the officer’s mouth.

The Traffic Police Division of Nha Trang said it has submitted a report to the Khánh Hoà Provincial Police for further investigation and clarification of the cause.

According to initial information, earlier the same day, a task force from the Nha Trang traffic police unit was dispatched to the scene of a traffic collision that occurred at the intersection of Trần Phú and Tuệ Tĩnh streets in Nha Trang Ward (formerly Lộc Thọ Ward, Nha Trang City).

An officer from the task force was mediating a heated argument following a traffic collision involving a motorbike driven by a Russian national – reportedly with signs of drunkenness – and another vehicle.

While the authorities were carrying out their duties, the Russian man demanded that his motorbike be returned so he could leave the scene.

However, when his request was denied, he suddenly punched a traffic police officer directly in the mouth, causing injury and bleeding to the face, but the officer’s health was reportedly not threatened.

The task force and local police immediately restrained the Russian national and took him to the police station for questioning.

At present, the relevant authorities are continuing to verify the incident and compile case files for legal proceedings in accordance with the law.
