ULAANBAATAR – Uncertainty hangs over when classes and school activities will return to normal after teachers across the country declared an indefinite strike, leaving parents and guardians waiting for confirmation.

The Mongolian Federation of Education and Science Trade Unions is demanding that teachers’ salaries be raised to MNT 3.5 million. About 30,000 teachers and staff from more than 500 educational institutions launched the strike on October 9, 2025.

Some media outlets have reported that the strike has been called off following an agreement. However, the Ministry of Education and the General Department of Education have not issued any official statement or confirmed those reports.

P.Naranbayar, Minister of Education, told reporters last Friday that schools and kindergartens must reopen by next Monday, saying Mongolian social life “cannot be frozen any longer” and warning that children’s academic setbacks would have serious consequences.
